What are the lean cuts of meat?

When shopping for meat, words like round, loin or leg indicate cuts that are lean or lower in total fat and saturated fat. If you’re not sure of the cut, ask the butcher or check the label.

1. Eye round roast and steak

2. Sirloin tip side steak

3. Top round roast and steak

4. Bottom round roast and steak

5. Top sirloin steak

All cuts listed above have 5 or less grams of total fat and 2 or less grams of saturated fat for a 3 ounce cooked portion. A skinless chicken thigh is actually slightly higher in total fat than any of the beef cuts listed above.

Just remember, lean cuts does not mean “all you can eat”. Keep the portion of your meat to just 1/4 of your plate while filling at least half your plate with fruits and vegetables.
